Introduction
In this article, we will learn how to set up an email delivery notification and read a receipt in the Microsoft Outlook email client.
What is Email Delivery Notification and Read Receipt?
When you send an email to someone, you don’t know whether the email has been delivered, read, or both because you don’t receive a reply from the recipient.
When you enable email delivery notification and read receipt while sending an email, you will receive a delivery receipt when the email message is delivered to the recipient’s mailbox and a read receipt confirmation when the recipient opens the message.
You will not receive the read receipt when the recipient declines to send read receipts or the recipient’s email program doesn’t support read receipt functionality.
How to set up email delivery notification and read a receipt in Microsoft Outlook
Open the Microsoft Outlook application. Compose the email, go to options, and select “Request a Delivery Receipt” and “Request a Read Receipt” options, then send the email.

If the email message is delivered to the recipient mailbox, you will receive a delivery notification.

When the recipient opens the email message, a window will pop up asking for a read request to be sent. If the recipient selects Yes, you will receive a read receipt, but if the recipient selects No, you will not receive a read receipt.

Let’s say the recipient sends the read receipt request. You will see an email message as below in your inbox.

Request Delivery and Read Receipt on all sent messages by default
Open Outlook, click File > Options
Choose Mail in the left pane
Scroll down to the tracking section
Select the Delivery receipt confirming the message was delivered to the recipient’s e-mail server and Read receipt confirming the recipient viewed the message.

When you send any email message, you will receive a delivery notification and a read receipt.
